Paul Graham

Empty Heaven e End of an Age.

"From 1988-1992 I was travelling around Western Europe, and became interested in the weight that the past exerts on each society, the burden of history if you like, and how this entwines with daily life - this became a major theme of my work New Europe. These concerns were developed when I travelled through Japan, a society which has a traumatic recent history, to say the least, yet on the surface seemed to reflect a huge collective amnesia. This provoked questions about wrapping, or masking of history and power, and how this is woven into the fabric of conscious and subconscious Japan" Paul Graham

"Photography is a medium with a unique and particular link to reality. Previously there was no problem about this, the world was out there, and you simply had to put your camera over your shoulder and go out with an open heart and head to observe this reality. This was the 'old consciousness' if you like. The problem is that over the past two decades our perception of reality has changed from something 'out there' to something 'within us', a blend of external, internal, past and present stimuli, personal and collective beliefs, mediated and original ideas..."
